Timber that suits the character
Away from the salt band, you have the full run of materials, and in these older, tree-lined streets, timber still looks right. A capped hardwood paling fence on solid posts, with a cap rail and a plinth board holding the palings off the ground, is the classic Newcastle backyard run and it ages beautifully.
- Hardwood palings for durability, or treated pine for value, both built to last with proper posts and rails.
- Lapped-and-capped for a solid privacy fence with no gaps and a clean finished top.
- Timber picket for a front fence where the street has that traditional character.
- A quick note we always make: timber wants the odd oil or stain to hold its colour, Colorbond is the no-upkeep alternative if that's not your thing.

Repair · replace · make good
When the old fence gives up
Established suburbs mean established fences, and a lot of them are near the end. A southerly buster brings palings down, decades of wet-dry rots the posts at ground line, an old steel fence rusts through at the bottom rail. Not all of it needs replacing.
We'll give you the honest read: a few storm-down palings or one leaning post we can often make good; a run that's rotted or rusted through its whole length is usually better replaced to match so it doesn't look patched. Bring a photo to the measure and we'll tell you straight which way it stacks up.
